Curlew Sandpiper
Calidris ferruginea
Critically endangeredNCA CR · EPBC CE
The Curlew Sandpiper travels Moreton Bay's tidal flats, arriving from northern breeding grounds to feed along Australia's coast through the warmer months. It searches the soft surface for tiny invertebrates as the tide falls. Moreton Bay supports more than one percent of the flyway population, yet numbers have fallen sharply. Small, restless and easily overlooked, it reminds us that tiny visitors need undisturbed places to rest before the long return north.
